This was taken during the Ashura ceremony in Bahrain when Shia Muslims mourn Iman Hussien who was slain at the Battle of Karbala during the First Islamic Civil War that ensured from the power struggle that broke out shortly after the death of the Prophet Mohammed.

The highlight are marches by processions of men performing the "Azza" which involves energetic thumping of one's chest. Standing right there up close and personal with a 50mm lens meant that one could feel the rhythmic sounds echoing through ones body.

I tried to capture the movement in the hands after noticing the shots I was getting were a bit too static.

Yep. You definitely needed the movement in the hands. They would have looked like statues otherwise. The movement gives the picture a bit more life and helps tell the story of what's going on.

This is quite an excellent capture!! Using the slower SS to get the hand movement, but fast enough to freeze facial expression works well to convey the fervor of the moment. The young child in the center of the shot adds a disturbing emotional impact to an already thought provoking photo.
